Global Container Terminal Tracking System

Sector: Logistics & Shipping | Technologies: Java, Kafka, PostGIS, MapLibre, OpenStreetMap

Challenge: A global container terminal operator needed real-time visibility of equipment positions across multiple sites worldwide. The existing system couldn’t scale and had accuracy issues with GPS data.

Solution: We designed and built a new tracking platform processing thousands of GPS updates per second. The system uses Kafka for reliable event streaming, PostGIS for spatial queries, and MapLibre GL for smooth map rendering. Self-hosted OpenStreetMap provides consistent base mapping globally.

Outcome: 400+ concurrent users across multiple continents. Blue/green deployments enable zero-downtime updates. Position accuracy improved significantly through GPS filtering algorithms.


Maritime Big Data Analytics

Sector: Maritime & Hydrographic | Technologies: Hadoop, Apache Spark, AWS EMR, Python

Challenge: A government agency needed to process and analyse large volumes of maritime data for product generation and quality assurance.

Solution: Technical leadership for a big data team implementing Spark-based processing pipelines on AWS EMR. Established development practices, testing strategies, and deployment automation for the data platform.

Outcome: Processing pipelines running reliably in production. Team upskilled in big data technologies and practices.


Intelligence Analysis Platform

Sector: Defence & Intelligence | Technologies: RDF, SPARQL, Java, d3.js, NLP

Challenge: Analysts needed to explore complex relationships across multiple data sources, with the ability to query connections that would be impossible with traditional databases.

Solution: Knowledge graph platform using RDF and SPARQL, with NLP pipelines extracting entities and relationships from unstructured text. Custom visualisation tools made complex graph structures comprehensible.

Outcome: Platform deployed and adopted by analyst community. Enabled new types of analysis that weren’t previously possible.


Government Research Programme

Sector: Government & Public Sector | Technologies: Java, Semantic Web, HCI, NLP

Challenge: Applied research programme exploring applications of semantic web technologies, human-computer interaction, and natural language processing.

Solution: Technical contribution to research initiatives, prototype development, and demonstration systems exploring novel applications of emerging technologies.

Outcome: Research outputs contributed to programme objectives. Prototypes demonstrated feasibility of new approaches.
